Two Earthquakes

Haiti has not fully recovered yet and another catastrophe has hit the world. Japan was hit by an earthquake on 26 February, 2010. It registered with a magnitude of 6.9 in the Richter Scale. The news is still hot when another quake hit Chile yesterday, 27 February and it registered 8.8. in the RS. Reports indicate that plenty of people perished in the Chilean earthquake.

I am not a harbinger of bad news but the signs are everywhere such as weather disturbances, political unrest, and economic downturn.

Let's all offer our prayers to the people of Japan and Chile. Tsunami alert has been raised on countries lying on the Pacific region. Please take heed.

A Different Cure

Addiction can be cured. There are ways to help the people we know who are suffering from this and alcohol rehabilitation is one of the treatment readily available to those who wish to be treated. Before I go further, how do we define addiction? Is it just about alcohol dependency or are there more?

The dictionary defines addiction as a form of dependency to a particular substance or being enslaved to a habit or psychologically or physically habit-forming like narcotics. It causes severe trauma to a person who is addicted to any of the above when practiced or withdrawal from the substance occurs.

We all have our own addiction. We may not know it but some of the little things we do or take form as addiction in a subtle and controllable way. For instance, drinking coffee every morning, checking emails and the Internet constantly, flicking our hair, chewing gum, tapping our legs while seated; those are ordinary and regular things we take and do. We can classify them as minor addiction which are all acceptable as long as it does not border being excessive. Intervention becomes necessary when it becomes excessive and damaging to someone's well-being.

We can curtail addiction through various means. Treatment and rehabilitation facilities are now established to address the issues of addiction. They are equipped to meet the needs of individuals suffering from addiction. The treatment can be from dual diagnosis treatment, counseling, rehabilitation, support groups, relapse prevention, and aftercare treatment.

Nothing can be more painful than to see someone we love suffer from the destructive means of addiction. As it leaves hurt, broken self-esteem and stress at its wake, addiction can be stopped without hurting the person we love. The road to recovery also starts from the individual and the full love and support of his or her family.

As I have mentioned earlier, addiction can be cured. Don't wait when it is too late. The moment you see patterns of detrimental practice and dependency to substances, seek help and save a life.

Girls Talk - Me as a Lover

I am not sure how to describe myself as a lover without having to "blow my horn." This is as honest as I can get in my description.

I am a typical Piscean and as one, I love very deeply. Relationships for me are very important so I am very loyal.

I am sensitive and very passionate about many things and sometimes (unconsciously) I tend to smother my partner too much. My dear hubby does tell me to ease a bit when I overdo it because I also respect his own "space."

My love style is very conventional. I am a hopeless romantic.

What does my other blogging sisters have to say about themselves as Lovers? Want to find out? Head on to Niko's blog and have a good read.

Being Sick is a Crime

It is in the work force! Baloney to those who say "Oh, if you're not well, go home and take a rest" because they don't mean that! Not an iota of sincerity on that phrase. If you get sick and your bosses tell you that, don't go home and take a sick leave. It will come to haunt you if you do.

Any corporation, be it large or puny, will never, ever tolerate sickly people. To the management, being sick is like being handicap where they brand and stereotype you as weak. Well, it is not like one wants to be sick at all times but some people like yours truly was born with a frail health. I did not want to be sickly. I prefer to be fit if I have a choice and if I can change my genetic composition. However, my health will never come close to being stellar.

So now, I feel like I have a disability which the company does not tolerate. Mind you, even if I squeeze my juices dry, they will never give what is due to me.

I hope my daughter will not follow the road I have trudged. Regrets always come late. I should have built my own company back when I was able and would have been the kind of boss who extends compassion.

Good Bye Lola

Lola was our spunky and fat guinea pig who was the other half of Git. Lola was a little ball of fuzzy fur when I bought her from a pet shop 4 years ago. She was small and afraid. She was 3 years old when she joined our Creator this morning. She now lives in heaven with her other babies.

It took me a while to break the news to my daughter who has been through the ordeal of losing her pet Sheepy on 28 July, 2008. This is a part of a pet-owners' experience - dealing with a loved pet.

We will all miss our fur ball named Lola. She was the naughtiest and bravest cavy we ever had. Git will miss you a lot Lola. Go and play in your heavenly meadows with your other kids now . You've brought so much joy in our lives and we will forever be grateful. We will always love you...

Movies and Me

Oh, I don't know what title to give this post. It's just that for the past week while I was having my much awaited vacation leave, I was also sick and in bed. During that time, I must have watched a dozen of movies I never dare to watch on the big screen.

Imagine being sick for almost a week? Boring right and utmost back-wrenching! So, I did the unimaginable. I watched and watched until I fall asleep or the medicine kicked in, which ever came first to knock me off.

I never thought I would enjoy the time spent at home watching movie and just lying in bed doing that. So what if the laundry piled up; the dirty dishes reached the ceiling and my back almost form part of the bed cushion? I was having a fun time while blowing my nose and coughing like a mad dog!

Tuh-tah for now. I am going to watch Julie and Julia and that's going to be very nice because it's about blogging and cooking! What a treat, though I don't like cooking but I like Meryl Streep and Amy Adams!

Health Nut - No Aching Joints

I have reached that age (or must I say, I have reached the pinnacle of my weight dilemma!) where my joints are starting to ache a wee bit specially when it is cold or when I am on a stationary position for so long.

Back when I was slim, trim and very healthy, I did not feel any of these aching symptoms nora slight sensation. I noticed when I started piling the pounds, my joints started to ache and sometimes they ache so bad.

I went to the doctor to have my blood chem checked and it still registers as normal. However, the doc advised me to lose pounds because my weight is putting a burden on my joints. OK, simply put - I am fat!

Here is a juice which can give your joints certain comfort - Orange Juice. Yes, that OJ thing can give you the beta-cryptoxanthin which aids in reducing the risk of polyarthritis. Not only that, it is loaded with Vitamin C which is another important nutrient needed to have healthy joints.

So, get your juicers out and squeeze those oranges dry.

Missing Your Pet?

I am a pet lover and my pets are not just four-legged creatures sharing a place in my home but they are part of the family. I will do everything I can to ensure that they are well cared, showered with love and treated as part of the family.

I am not surprised by how pet owners in the USA treat they precious furry buddies as one of the family members. They make sure that the animals are covered with health care and other benefits, receive their regular health and medical check ups and grooming. So, it comes as no surprise when a loved pet becomes "missing."

It is really great to know that there is a "missing pet alert" service in the US which can assist in locating lost pets. PetAmberAlert is a service which assists pet owners in helping find their pets. When the information is gathered from the pet owner by the Lost Pet Amber Alert, one of the staff will facilitate the process of spreading the information to animal shelters, veterinarians, groomers, animal control offices, media, police stations, pet shops and neighborhood watch volunteers. The posters containing information about the lost pet is sent via express mail, facsimile or email as instructed by the pet owner. People who have seen the posters will notify Pet Amber Alert via their website or hotline if they found or sighted the animal concerned.

As a member of the highly trusted TRUSTe and a verified certificate holder of the same, Pet Amber Alert is not a scam. Its purpose and objective is help you find your lost pet and with that, comes their integrity to assist you in their utmost ability.

Who Loves Math?

Raise your hand if you do! I really admire those whose minds work like a clock when it comes to solving Math problems. My dilemma started when my daughter commenced learning pre-algebra on her 6th Grade. Algebra? Nooooo! That was my immediate response while having palpitations and tiny beads of sweat trickle on my forehead. Ask me in Physics, Chemistry and even Biology but not in MATH???

I am not really poor in Math, it's just that, most typical people who are good in arts, crafts and the languages, my other half of the brain finds it hard to process figures. I am bad at figures (even my "figure" is bad...harhaarharr! No pun intended...smile!). I actually have high grades in Math but am very slow when it comes to solving problems. I remember submitting my test papers while my other classmates have long left the school. My teacher had to plead for me to submit my papers whether I was finished or not. Of course I would not budge. It was my grade at stake not hers or anyone. I just had to give her that "puppy look" which amazingly, always get my teachers off guard and next time they knew it, they were reluctantly waiting for me to complete my test.

To my surprise, I always ace my exams and even got 97 in Trigonometry! How did that happen? I have no clue.

So now, I am wracking my head again because of my daughter. I have to scour the internet and libraries for references on solving math problems.

I thought I was already done with all these things. Here I am again, faced with the same math problems I dreaded many, many moons ago. Sigh...

Cover Me Up

Our semi-bay window in the bedroom is screaming "cover me up!" for some time now. Ever since we moved in this building 3 years ago, my hubby and I decided to leave the window alone, sans the adornment of that sorts. Given the very humid and hot weather here in the Middle East, I think we need to reconsider our decision and better buy some nice faux wood blinds for the window. Our bed is located near the window and the peak of the day's sunshine strikes in our window. That makes it too bright and hot in our room even with the air conditioning unit on. I think a trip to the mall is inevitable. It's going to be summer soon here.

Why I Love our Pets!

I am re-posting this. I can't get enough of my sweet Millie. So, this is in honor of all the pets who have come and go in our lives. Just few reasons why we love our pets so much. Enjoy the read!

~oOo~
Pets are normally man's best companion, not just dogs, but pets in general. I grew up in a house full of pets and I have always loved them. I took the responsibility of taking care of them while I was young and I am teaching my daughter the same responsibility.

Why do I love pets? Let me count the ways:

1. They don't judge you. They just love you for who you are and that's unconditional!
2. They lick your worries away.
3. They are so cute and cuddly no matter the shape and size and color they represent.
4. They are warm and fuzzy.
5. They follow you as their master but loves you just the same.
6. They know who you are even from afar. No introduction required!
7. They make me smile.
8. They listen to my whines and woes. They listen to my laughter and tears.
9. They keep me company.
10. They are beings.

Birthday Favor

My daughter just turned 12 today! She is so excited because she is handing out party favors to her classmates. Jokingly, I asked her, since when does a birthday celebrant give gifts? Isn't she supposed to get gifts and not give them? Well, I was just pulling her legs.

I love to give gifts so off I went to Ikea 2 weeks ago and bought those cute and small spice canister in pack of 4's. A set costs AED 9.00 so that is about US$ 2.50. Not bad I thought. She has 37 classmates and 5 extra teachers so I bought 11 and I got to keep 2 for my scrap trinkets!

Then last week, I took her to the supermarket so she could choose the yummy treats to put inside. We bought chocolates, heart candies (since her birthday falls a day after Valentine's), toffees, and Chupa Chups mini-lollipops in various flavors. We really had fun going around the sweets aisle and wished we could grab more.

I made small tags for her birthday favor with a handmade ice cream cone as embellishment. So cute! So yummy too!

I just dropped her to school a while ago and I can't wait to hear her story about the favors and if her classmates liked them. It is a functional birthday favor, I must say. Not only that you get some treats, you get to keep the container and put your what-have-you there. Also, the small tag can be used as a bookmark. Now, that's super functional! :)

Here are pictures of the favor and tags. Hope you liked them too. So next time you have kids who wants to give out party favors and you are pressed for time and on a tight budget, just take note of this. It won't burn a hole on your pocket.

My Birthday Letter to My Princess

I still remember, 12 years ago, when I held you in my arms the first time you came in our lives. It seems like it was just yesterday. And now I wake up to find you all grown up. Whenever I close my eyes, I see the image of you when you were still a tot. Your world revolved around me and mine to yours. We were together, inseparable, a tandem, mom and daughter, just you and I. You held on to me for support. You always called out my name when I leave the room. You were my biggest fan. Until now...

Time flies my sweet princess. I can no longer hold you tight because I don't want to suffocate you but in my heart I wish I can just keep you close. I need to let you spread your wings baby girl. You need to discover the world outside your shell. Slowly as the days go by, I am seeing you as a different person. No longer the baby I held in my arms 12 years ago but a young and blossoming lady.

My princess, you have grown up. And today is your 12th birthday, your papa and I wish you good health and a long and happy life. We want to keep you close but I guess we can't do that. You're growing up and you need space to be the kind of person you want to be. We may get in the way sometimes if we feel you will get hurt or be heart broken over someone or something. That's what parents do, they protect their young.

So, as you venture to your new found phase in life, please bear in mind that our love goes with you where ever you go. There is no boundaries for that kind of love. You will feel that too when you become a parent someday.

Happy Birthday my dearest sweet princess. Your Papa and I love you so much.

Love always,

Mama

Handmade Valentine Cards

I have been very busy these past few days because of my handmade cards activity. I created Valentine Lollie Cards and simple Valentine cards made out of card stock, patterned papers, ribbons, glitters and flat back gems for my daughter and her friends. They all liked the Valentine Lollie cards because they are unique, cute and no need to put in an envelope. And what is a lollipop without the stick handle right?

Here are my creations:

Yo Mama!

I don't know if I'll be happy or sad with my new nickname. Yo Mama is short for Yo-Yo mama because my weight keeps going up and down and up and down. Just like how a yo-yo works. Just last week I was a kilo down and now, I gained 1 1/2 kilos. My rope of patience is about to snap and I better come up with a plan I can commit myself into. I know there are new weight loss products out in the market and I better act soon. I can't wait for another nickname to be branded to me. The next time they call me it better be - Yo Sexy Mama!

Clean Up Like Crazy

What does a dateless person do on a Valentine's Day while enjoying a much deserved rest and relaxation? Check Facebook? Play flash games? Walk the dog? Laundry? Press clothes? Sleep all day? Well, tempting as they may seem (they are honestly in my list of things to do for the whole week), I have to clean the house for the coming of spring!

I chanced upon some old clippings of diets that work stashed in my important documents file. I was surprised to see the dates on the articles I have clipped and printed. I realized how long I have been planning to put this weight loss goal in motion and always end up from scratch.

I am keeping the articles I printed for future reference. And when I say future, I hope that is the "near future." Meanwhile, I better get back to my cleaning duty before hubby comes home.

Dateless on Valentine's Day

While lovers all over the world scamper for the best seat in the restaurant or a fine date in a nice and cozy place, I am stuck at home enjoying my much deserved R & R. That's rest and relaxation which have been deprived from me for several months.

Just few weeks ago, before I learned that our vacation to Los Angeles was going to be sacked, I planned for a romantic get-away with my hubby while I leave my daughter with my aunt. I was already checking out motorhomes from the Internet. I thought hubby and I could drive off to Lake Tahoe for a romantic date. Poof! That's the sound of my dream being pricked by a needle!

So here I am, day-dreaming in sunny Dubai...

HVD 2010

I don't want to say that Valentine's Day is so over-rated. It shouldn't be. We can all celebrate the special "one-day" love day 365 days in a year regardless of the season.

Happy Valentine's Day to all. Here's wishing a fun-filled, romantic day to everyone, be it now or in the future. Let it be Valentine's Day all year round!

Earn Extra from Home

My friend and I have been wracking our heads thinking of a good opportunity where we can earn extra income from home. We have a very nice office timing to allow us to spend time at home for a viable business to augment our income. This recession has really brought the best in us in terms of sticking to stringent budget, fewer money to spend on unnecessary things and wiser investments.

My handmade cards have given me extra income on the side but a steady flow of cash from another activity may just do the trick. Any suggestions?

Online Criminal Justice Degree

I believe in fulfilling one's educational goals. It is important to carry a degree no matter what other people say about having a degree is just a paper. Yes, people will have their own perspective about education but holding that diploma is another story if you want to succeed and give a positive contribution to our society.

The present time has given us many opportunity to continue our studies even from the comfort of our homes. Before, I remember commuting to my graduate school after work and do my assignments and project until the wee hour of the morning and go to work barely having a decent sleep. Students these days are very lucky for having more choices and flexibility in their studies unlike before.

Online degrees can be obtained anytime. There are wide array of degrees to choose from and we have an influx of MBA students already. The introduction of criminal justice degree in colleges and universities offering online degree is a great step. Northwestern College is one of the colleges and universities offering online learning modules of the criminal justice degree. It offers flexible schedule for classes, a lifetime career assistance and financial aid to deserving students.

I feel that the Criminal Justice Degree must be given exposure to encourage students to pursue this course. There are too many shady activities around us these days and our society can get help from more criminal justice degree students who will uplift the preservation of the law , justice and order and respect for humanity. It is high time to make a big difference in our world where crime abound. And by pursuing this course, you can make a change that will positively affect the world we live in.

Security and Fliers

Our building lobby has a security feature which is quite advanced. It has an automatic door which only opens when a resident buzz you in. It used to be just open so anyone can come in and go and we felt that our safety is not taken seriously. Also, plenty of people from various companies leave their fliers and brochures about restaurants, supermarket produce special, insurance advertising, products and services. Lately, I have noticed that the fliers have dwindled in number. Either the building's security feature is really up or there is barely a company left here. I wonder...

Spotless Back

I really admire those ladies who can bare their freckles-free, pimple-free and not so hairy backs with pretty off shoulder blouses and tube dresses. I remember when wearing those kind of clothing when I was younger and blemish-free. I wonder what happened as I have gotten older. Although I barely get pimples on my face and I am very thankful for that. My back is another problem. Lately, I noticed some rashes which I think are small pimples. I wonder if I can find any good acne body wash here in Dubai. I just cannot stand having small rashes at my back. I can bear having freckles here and there but please not the zits!

The Insect Zoo

I only knew of animal zoo while I was growing up. There were few museums which cater to birds and insects. The present time has given plenty of opportunity for the younger generations with the creation of more museums housing several units on animals, aviary and the small insects.

O. Orkin Insect Zoo is a part of the Smithsonian's National Museum of History. It is a place where people can observe how the world of insects evolve. Visitors can witness live feedings of tarantula and like most petting zoos, some of the insects can be held and touched. This is a rare experience one will remember specially those who have the affinity for insects.

A visit to the Smithsonian's website will be beneficial too. The site offers tips on how to plan for your field trip. Resources are available for educators to share to their students. People who are into insects can also sign up as volunteers. For those who are pursuing Entomology or the study pertaining to insects, can further their knowledge and experience by signing up as an intern.

There is so many things to learn and see there. Visit the O. Orkin Insect Zoo at 10th Street and Constitution Avenue in Washington D.C. Schedule your trip soon and let your hungry mind feeds you information about the insect world.

A Little Help

I am very thankful for having a daughter who shares the same passion as I have in arts and craft. I was commissioned to do my friend's baptismal invitation and party favors. I could use some help considering I don't have a die-cutting machine to aid me in my craft and will make cutting easier . However, my help comes in the form of the extra hands my daughter lends me to make things easier for me.

I have few weeks to go before the delivery date and I am glad I have my little help.

Health Nut - Great Breakfast Meals to Burn Fat

I am eager to weak skinny jeans once again. It will take time for me to lose the much needed weight so I have to incorporate a good exercise with my diet plan. When I say diet, that means eating properly and not skipping on any meals. And portion-controlled eating too.

Studies show that having these food as part of your breakfast can aid in burning fat. These food are: eggs, yogurt and cereals. Why does it have to be breakfast? Well, our morning meal is the most important meal of the day if you want to control your appetite and lose weight. Here are the reasons why these 3 food must be added in our breakfast meal:

Eggs: They contain protein which makes us full so it curbs our appetite.

Yogurt: Calcium-rich food which helps in inhibiting fat storage in our small intestines and aid in digestion.

Whole-grain Cereals: Rich in fibre. These cereals help control blood sugar level and lessen belly fat.

So, don't skip your breakfast! Eat healthy!

Aid in Losing Weight

It seems like I am not the only one with weight problems. My friend is also looking for the best weight loss pills she can find in the market because she needs to lose weight fast. Her hubby is coming home for a brief vacation from work this March and she wants to surprise him. I told her to check out the nutrition shops in her place and read some reviews of weight loss pills from internet sites just to get information to help her decide on which one to actually purchase.

Review on Diet Pills

This quest to lose weight has taken so much of my time lately. I have been going through the internet and checking diet pill reviews to aid me in my decision on which product to choose depending on its availability here in Dubai.

I just previously posted about the green tea weight loss supplement my aunt gave me. I have not tried that yet but will consider after I gather the necessary information I require before I take the plunge. I am giving myself time to think things through so when I am ready, I will use some supplements to make me lose weight. Fast!

Quick Weight Loss Product

My aunt bought me a quick weight loss product but I will not name the brand. It comes in 2 big plastic bottles containing 60 capsules each. I have not tried it yet as I am weighing many factors. First, I want to make sure it will not make my heart palpitate. Second, it must be approved by the FDA and lastly, it must not make me move all the time like most fat burner pills.

I will start taking the product soon but I need to increase my workout session because the weight loss supplement contains green tea so I will be more active the usual. However, I am still looking for other weight loss supplements but have yet to hear from people who have tried them.

Not Going

I have been planning for another trip to the US since last November 2009. Due to unforeseen events, I had to cancel the trip for the last quarter of 2009. Come January, 2010, we planned to travel on the 2nd week of the same month but my passport got wet so we had to postpone to a later date until I get my new passport. Now that I have my new passport and ready to go next week, my relatives in the US requested if we could postpone it again to a later date because they are going through rough times in their personal lives.

So there, I am taking heed of the signs. This is the 3rd time my US trip got cancelled and that is it. I am not going there for the meantime.

I just hope everything goes well with my relatives there.

The LORD does speak to me in many ways and various forms. I shall listen.

Quick Trim

Nothing is more rewarding than obtaining your goals. When it comes to my weight loss goal this year, I am far from the victory line.

I am regularly exercising but the weight has not budged yet. I am thinking of ways to make my effort rewarding by cutting back on my food intake, raising my cardio and fussing around. I just have to keep moving.

On top of those activities, I am also searching the Internet for good sites to give me information on supplements, for example: www.quicktrimreviews.com. The product offered there has a review so it can give me insight. I will check the nutrition shop again this weekend if I can find Quick Trim here in Dubai.

Weight Loss Supplements Here

I went to one of the nutrition shops here in Dubai where various health, weight loss and weight gain products are sold. There are too many to choose from that I got a bit confused. The weight loss supplements here are carefully regulated by the Ministry of Health so I am sure that if I buy any weight loss supplements, that particular product has passed the FD approval. Otherwise, I am keen to take my weight loss goal in a different approach. That is, to jog like crazy until I reach my happy and healthy weight. Oh, by the way, I am going to jog tomorrow for an hour. Let's see if my aching knees cooperate.

A Different Rehab

I remember the time when my family had to go through tough times when one of my family members fell into bad vices and became drug dependent.

It was the most trying time for everybody. At first, we were all in denial until one day, we just had to give in and accept the inevitable - that person had to be admitted in a drug rehab.

It is really poignant and the memories of anguish is unbearable when you know someone you love is suffering and badly needs your help and guidance. I honestly thought we would never pass the obstacles but we all did for the sake of that loved one. We all made sure that our family member would learn from the mistakes done and that the stint inside the drug rehab would be a lesson to learn for life.

We must not abuse ourselves. There is help. So if you know someone who needs help on his or her addiction to substance, do not wait and hesitate. Contact any rehab center for details.

Cure For Pimples

My daughter did not get my genes when it comes to having a clear complexion. Not that my complexion is flawless, it is just that I did not get pimples too often while I was in my puberty stage.

Her forehead at the moment is still our problem. I have tried various acne remedies on her sensitive skin but she is still having break outs. I told her time and time again to continue eating fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water to clear her skin condition. If she would only listen...

Achey Breaky...Knee

I do not know why I am starting to feel joint pain specially in the knee area whenever I use the stairs or when I suddenly stand up from a seated position.

I think this is due to the fact that I gained weight substantially over the course of the previous years. I was really petite, almost bordering anorexic 6 years ago. However, due to hormonal imbalance, I became chubby and now I am certified fat! I think I need to have blood chem just to be sure.

Girls Talk - My One True Love

I am so relieved that last month's very intriguing theme is over and our marriage is intact! LOL! Since it is the month of Love, Niko decided to make this month's theme about love and your love.

My true love is obvious because I am married to the guy. My hubby is the man I will be with for the rest of my life. He completes me. He tames my mood swings. He neutralizes my craziness. He supports me in everything I do and he believes in what I can do even if I doubt myself. He is the father of my princess, the man who provides roof over our heads and food on our table. He is the man of the house. He is my husband and he is my true love...

I wonder who's who amongst my blogger sisters? Head on to Niko's blog and read their revelations :)

Fitness First!

Oh no, not the famous fitness club. I am referring to my goal this year to give priority to fitness and healthy lifestyle.

I am lucky enough to now spend a fortune by joining a fitness club because we have a gym in our residential building. The fitness equipment may not be as fabulous as the ones you will find in Fitness First or other top rate fitness gyms and health clubs here in Dubai. They are just fine if you are aiming to do regular and light exercise like running on the treadmill, lifting dumb bells or flexing and toning your muscles.
