Ever wonder why we sneeze? Well, according to Dr. Hank Clever, M.D., sneezing is a sudden, forceful, and involuntary burst of air through the nasal passages and mouth. It came from the Latin word “sternere” or to “cast down” for non-Latin speakers.
Sneezing (or sternutation) can be caused by many factors such as: irritant in the nasal passages and mucous membranes of the sinuses, irritant in the air like dust and pollen, from animals’ dander, and virus infections.
It is “nature’s broom” which “sweeps away foreign matters which have invaded our noses” according to Dr. James Banks, M.D. So next time you feel the urge to blast away, do so! Let it go! And while you do, Gesundheit to you! Achooooo! Bless you…
