When you have teens who are active and are always up and about, you have to be careful with their food intake to provide energy and lasting stamina. Teens metabolism is in good condition during their growing years as they tend to be more active and burn calories faster than adults. So, what healthy snacks should you give your sporty teens to ensure that they are eating nutritious food.
Yoghurt contains good bacteria that helps in digestion. It is not high in calorie especially if you choose Greek yoghurt. You can add diced mangoes, apricots, peaches, strawberries or kiwis on their yoghurt or any dried fruit for texture and added nutrition. If they want the crunch, you can add granola or oat flakes or chia seeds for extra omega-fatty acid.
Cut fresh fruits and crunchy vegetables
Pack cut fruits and vegetables in their lunch boxes for them to munch on rather than giving them unhealthy treats like chips. If your teen engages in rigorous sports and sweats a lot, pack fruits and vegetables that are not only tasty but also juicy like:
Peanut butter on wheat bread sandwich
Peanut butter is a filling and tasty treat. As long as your teen does not have any allergy to peanuts, go ahead, pack some nice peanut butter sandwich to go with his or her day meals.
Prepare your own version of trail mix, rather than serve the store-bought. Make sure your teen do not suffer from nut allergy as this healthy snack contains lots of nuts in various form and kind. Perfect trail mix will be almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and some dried fruits to make a nice protein rich snack.
Ensure that your active teens are also getting enough vegetables and fruits in their diet to provide the necessary nutrient their growing body needs like healthy fatty acids, carbohydrates and calcium, aside from having healthy snacks packed with protein.
