Tips On How to Clean Jewellery

If you’re a jewellery lover and your collection has really grown in the last few years, it might just be the time to give your adorable pieces a good cleaning. After all, you’re not sure how long it’s has been sitting there, right? The best thing is that some jewellery pieces like engagement rings may get tarnished beyond recognition, but they’ll look exactly the same way as you first bought them once you give them a scrub. You can clean your jewellery pieces like an engagement ring at home and it is easier than you ever thought.

Let us discover some easy and effective do-it-yourself tips on how to shine up all the jewellery in your box.

Use Baking Soda

The best way to clean tarnished silver pieces is to mix three parts of baking soda to one part of water. You can then wet the silver and proceed to apply the paste with a lint-free, soft cloth. Thereafter, you will be required to work in the crevices and then turn the cloth as it starts picking up the tarnish. The last step is all about rinsing the jewellery pieces well and buffing them dry.

Alternatively, you can clean dull silver jewellery by laying it on aluminium foil in a bowl and add baking soda and boiling water. Let is sit for about 25-35 minutes. The aluminium reacts with the baking soda and your silver jewellery will look brand new.

Use Antibacterial Cleaner or soap and water

You may use an antibacterial cleaner or the classic combo of soap and water to get rid of stains, general grime, and spots. For this, you may try out an antibacterial cleaner or a few drops of liquid dish soap with a few cups of water. You will now need to put the jewellery such as an engagement ring in the mixture for about 40-60 seconds and then use a clean cloth for wiping dry and buffing out any spots. It is important to remember here that you must make the jewellery pieces dry before you put them on. This method is a good choice for mild tarnish, stains, and general wear-and-tear, and may not work for major rust, spots, or build-up.

Boil Your Jewellery

If you want to clean your silver, gold, platinum, and diamond jewellery like an engagement ring, hot water can be an excellent choice. Heat and steam make dirt and debris to go away from the jewellery, which makes it a snap to wipe them away. All you need is to simply put jewellery in a heatproof container and then gradually pour boiling water over it until it is covered. Thereafter, let the jewellery sit for about 7-10 minutes or until the water has cooled. You can now remove the silver, gold, platinum, or diamond jewellery from the bowl and then wipe away the dirt, debris, and grime with a soft, clean cloth. Please make sure to dry the pieces of jewellery before putting them away.

[Note: Precious and semi-precious stones (e.g., sapphire, pearls, opals, lapis lazuli, amethyst, emerald) can crack if the water is too hot. You must always let the water cool for a while before you put your precious and semi-precious stones in warm water.]

Ideally, your precious metal jewellery should be protected against free-flowing air and moisture. It is best to keep your jewellery like an engagement ring in a small jewellery box, pouch, or something similar. If you love your jewellery pieces then you must always remember that they will need a clean more often. Keep an eye on them!
